Small Bird Publishing endeavors to create a space in which poets and writers who explore the possibilities of language are celebrated. We're ordinary people who love poetry, literature, language, and words. We're writers and poets just like you.
We don't want to be typecast; we just want the best bits. Experimental writing is fun, but so is form, especially when its rules are broken. Previously unpublished and published poets are welcome.
We have a proclivity for poetry and stories that explore those liminal spaces, both exterior and interior. For instance, we're interested in the intersection between earth and sky, humans and nature, home and place, and past and present.
And while we lean towards the natural world, we are also intrigued by. the way humans move within it or away from it. We like poetry and stories that work to reveal the truth of humanity. Mostly, we prefer language that glances sideways, skewing the expected world into something new, something surprising — Like the bright berry color of a cardinal in a barren winter bush.
Jeanice Eagan Davis is a poet, writer, and educator. She is also a loving spouse, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and aunt. She has works published in various literary publications, and she also has rejection letters from several such publications. Her love of literature and language was instilled in her by her mother and grandmother when she was just a young girl. It was their voices, singing out lines of poetry measured and lyrical, that invoked the rhythm that still beat, beat, beats within her today. One of her greatest joys is helping others find their own voice, their own rhythm, and to make places where their voices can be acknowledged, appreciated, and heard, which is why she and her daughter, Chelsea, have created Small Bird.
Chelsea Dowler followed in her mother's footsteps and became a poet, writer, and educator. She has been a dance instructor for the better part of a decade and has dedicated her life to the creation and enjoyment of art, whether that art is in the form of physical movement on a stage or that same movement being given new life on the page, her goal is to see life through art. To explore the complex emotions that come with living and to help others ride those waves through self-expression. She is a daughter, wife, sister, and aunt and has let those roles shape her writing and artistic style. During her college duration she came to love the journal creation process and after much thought and lots of work she decided to join her mother, Jeanice, in the creation of Small Bird.
